The End Makes You a Virtual Mixtape: 26.03.08 |
The End is set to launch a new free monthly music series, which you will be able to download from the club’s recently revamped website www.endclub.com. Named Recommends, each volume in the series will be a choice selection of some of the best music around.
The End’s virtual mixtape is the modern day equivalent of sitting with all of your cassettes spread out on the floor, painstakingly copying tracks one by one onto a master tape, which you then hand-decorate and give to your best friend or potential snog. Thankfully, the wonderous world of technology means this process is no longer necessary - but nonetheless, the same blood, sweat and tears has gone into selecting the perfect soundtrack each month.
Each instalment will bring you something a little different – whether a snapshot of what’s great from a specific genre, a showcase from one particular label, or a cross-genre musical medley of tracks that are rocking The End’s stereo right now. Each volume will aim to introduce some new acts that are kicking musical ass at the moment, alongside tracks from artists already at the top of their game.
Recommends Vol 1. launches on March 27th with a monster selection of tracks from artists Carl Craig, Simian Mobile Disco, Alex Metric, Late of the Pier, Black Ghosts and labels Soma, Brownswood and Marine Parade, plus heaps more. Visit www.endclub.com/recommends for more info from March 27th.
In addition, the club is also launching a monthly podcast, ‘Live at The End’ which will allow you to download some of the best mixes from the club for your iPod, as well as listen to interviews with artists. Layo & Bushwacka! provide the mix for the first podcast, with Ben Watt and James Holden set to follow. You will be able to download The End Podcast from www.endclub.com/podcasts or iTunes from March 27th.
Endclub.com already has a huge selection of mixes recorded live at the club that you can stream from the site, but this is the first time they are offering free music to download on a regular basis. Download it, burn it, stick it on your stereo - celebrate and dance for free!
Recommends Vol 1:
1 - Pepe Deluxe: Mischief of Cloud 6 (Catskills)
Music to watch the girls, clouds, or simply the world go by, from our favourite psychedelic eccentrics.
2 - Cadence Weapon: In Search of the Youth Crew (Big Dada)
Funky as it comes hip hop from the young Canadian rapper / producer.
3 – The Black Ghosts: Something New [Galactic Version] (Southern Fried)
Sing along on the dancefloor stuff from Simian’s Simon Lord and Touché from The Wiseguys under their Black Ghosts moniker.
4 - Simian Mobile Disco: Hustler [Skatebard Remix] (Wichita)
One of the biggest acts of the last two years needs no introduction, but this Skatebard remix takes the excellent ‘Hustler’ on a smoother and more hypnotic ride.
5 - Alex Metric: What She Wants (Marine Parade)
Infectious and unashamedly uplifting vocal electro stomper from Marine Parade’s new talent and Eddy Temple Morris’ ‘remixer of the year’, Alex Metric.
6 - Marlow: Convoy (Blackacre)
Dramatic and melancholy dubstep worth blowing your speakers for, from one of the hottest new producers on the scene.
7 - Cloud: Diamondtrack (Exceptional Records)
Tom Middleton and Jimpster rate him, and so should you! He’s only 20, but Alex Berg aka Cloud has produced a sublime slice of melodic yet punchy magic with Diamondtrack.
8 - Break 3000: Bleed Like Me [Daso remix] (Dirt Crew)
A dark, rolling powerhorse of a track from Dutch producer Peter Gijselaers with Daso on the remix.
09 - Let’s Go Outside: I Can’t Sleep (Soma)
Soma are one of the most consistently great labels in the UK, and this slow, weird (good weird!) filthy techno track from recent signing Stephen Schieberl is no exception.
10 - Hipp-E Featuring Lamont Moerhaus: Dance Wit Me (Slip'N'Slide)
Hipp-E has spent almost two decades behind the decks, and it shows when he produces hip shakin’ feet shufflin’ tracks like this. He doesn’t need to ask us to dance – we’re already dancing!
11 - Jose James: Black Eyed Susan [IG Culture’s 4 Beat Refit] (Brownswood)
Brooklyn based Irish jazz singer Jose James was so determined to get Gilles Peterson to listen to his stuff, he flew all the way to London to hand him his demos in person. It paid off, as Gilles snapped him up for his excellent Brownswood label straight away.
12 - Late of the Pier: The Bears Are Coming [Partyshank Remix] (Parlophone)
Co-produced by Erol Alkan, and remixed by Partyshank, this chaotic, confrontational slice of pop actually does sound a bit like a bear has walked into your living room. Brilliant.
13 - Carl Craig: Brain Freeze (!K7)
Carl Craig is one of dance music’s most well respected DJs and producers, and in Brainfreeze he’s created a perfect 5am-on-the-dancefloor track to finish Recommends Vol. 1 with a bang.
