World exclusive launch for new DJ / Producer instrument - TENORI-ON: 23.08.07 |
This September Yamaha will be showcasing their brand new and visually stunning interactive
live performance instrument the TENORI-ON exclusively to the world through a selection of 8
carefully selected record shops across the UK.
The TENORI-ON is a unique 16 x 16 LED button matrix performance instrument with a
stunning visual display. For DJs & producers it is a unique performance tool enabling them to
perform using MIDI and load the TENORI-ON with samples to ‘jam / improvise’ within their set
BPMs.
By operating and interacting with the LED buttons and the light they produce you gain access
to the TENORI-ON's numerous performance capabilities. The TENORI-ON provides six
different performance and sound/light modes for broad performance versatility, and these
modes can be combined and used simultaneously for rich, complex musical expression.
Conceived by leading Japanese media artist Toshio Iwai in 2001 and following five years of
intensive development. The TENORI-ON has been showcased at major music festivals and
media art festivals ; Sonar (Spain), Futuresonic (U.K), Ars Electronica (Austria), SIGGRAPH
(U.S), Art Futura (Spain) and more as well as being road tested by cutting edge electronic
music artists: Kraftwerk, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Matthew Herbert, Mouse On Mars,
Cornelius, To Rococo Rot, Jim O’ Rourke, Rei Harakami, Taylor Deupree, Tortoise and Atom
Heart, The TENORI-ON is one of the most innovative and exciting new instruments to be
released by Yamaha for many years.
From 4th September the TENORI-ON will be on display in the following record shops around
the UK, apart from exclusive performances at events listed above, this is the first time the
TENORI-ON has been put on display to the public, enabling UK DJs and performers the first
opportunity in the world to experience this unique tool.

On Tuesday 4th September, Yamaha will host a very special launch world – exclusive launch
event at Soho’s Phonica Records featuring a talk from TENORI-ON inventor and Japan’s
leading media artist Toshio Iwai and TENORI-ON performances from Robert Lippok (To
Roccoco Rot), Secondo (Dreck Records) and Capracara (Soiul Jazz Records).

"Toshio Iwai's TENORI-ON show at Futuresonic 2006 took people's
breath away. Playing alongside Battles and Fennesz at one of the
profile music events of the festival, he left the audience visibly
stunned. The TENORI-ON is one tight, explosive package. For some it
is a phenomenal, intuitive live performance instrument. Or the
ultimate pick-up-and-play music toy. For others it is the last word
in high art and design. It was an undisputed highlight of our 10th
anniversary festival in 2006, and has left an indelible mark in
