Details: Following up their record-breaking antics in 2007, Hed Kandi launch headlong into 2008 by adding a brand new member to the Kandi family; Kandi Lounge. Always catering for the clubbers every need, Team Kandi take a well-earned break from high-octane dance-floor glamour and return to their roots, assembling a flawless cruise through laid back funky soul and on, all the way to deliciously lazy Sunday beats. The perfect tonic as a pre-club warm-up and equally sublime just loafing on your sofa, Kandi Lounge creates the perfect setting, with serenely beautiful down-tempo delights.
The lush stabbing strings of 4 Hero’s ‘Morning Child’, featuring the dreamy vocals of silky chanteuse Carina Andersson usher in CD1, swiftly followed by Dame Shirley Bassey out-diva-ing Grace Jones on a stunningly rich reworking of ‘Slave To The Rhythm’ that shimmers with the Glimmer Twins’ own inimitable touch. The rolling jazz of 12th Floor’s ‘Take It Back’ and the dubwise throb of Waldeck’s ‘Memories’ provide a warming glow, before Kandi legend Andy Caldwell delivers his seminal ‘I Can’t Wait’, a track that could melt even the coldest heart. Moca’s Take Five-esque ‘Latein’ gives proceedings a cheeky feel-good quality that is kept throughout the dusty funk of The Snugs ‘Strugglin’ and ‘Don’t You Want Love’ another gem from Physics. D’Stephanie and Sneaky Fox add a hip-hop disco touch until the irrepressibly catchy hook of Peter, Bjorn & John’s all conquering ‘Young Folks’ bathes Kandi Lounge in its blissfully sunny vibes. Returning to more hypnotic beats, Office Gossip’s ‘Say It’ and IKON’s ‘Breaking’ as retold by All Good Funk Alliance lead into the first instalment’s dénouement, ‘Another Chance’. Supplied by Hed Kandi’s own Wez Clarke and featuring a sultry vocal from Maxine Hardcastle and sax from The Lovely Laura, ‘Another Chance’ leaves you wanting more.
Luckily, the second CD delivers just that, opening with Simian Mobile Disco’s sparklingly gorgeous ‘I Believe’ flawlessly setting the tone for this half of the Kandi Lounge experience. DJ T-Rock & Squashy Nice’s cut-up soul, Pacha Massive’s strutting funk, Rodney Hunter’s Halcyon beats featuring Earl Zinger’s soothing flow and D’Nell’s lavish RnB, ebb from the speakers before Tennishero’s filtered House boosts the beats. Swedish duo Studio make an appearance with their spacious mid-paced ‘Life’s A Beach’ as the bouncing Electro bass of Ananda Project’s ‘Where The Music Takes You’ heralds a series of heavenly cuts from some deeply cool producers. Dorfmeister (of Kruder & Dorfmeister infamy) goes head to head with MDLA for a coruscating moment of italo stabs and Balearic guitars that is ‘Boogie No More’. Minimal king John Dahlback steps up with the synth-laden misty excursion ‘Wonder’, which is followed by Miguel Migs’ wah-wah powered ‘Let Me Be’. The slick descending riffs of Restless Soul featuring Shea Soul’s ‘Tricks’ gives way to Yoruba founder Osunlade’s percussive driven ‘April’, which wraps up Kandi Lounge’s inaugural outing.
With 2008 looking set to be their busiest to date Hed Kandi have already set the bar at record height with the welcome addition of Kandi Lounge.
