Details: India's economy is growing. Its the 4th biggest buying market outside of the USA, China and Japan, it's in the top 5 tourist destinations according to Lonely Planet, there has been an explosion of luxury brands in its cities and Tesco is about to open its first store. Its clear times in India are a changin' and no wonder people from across the globe are flocking to experience the heady rush of culture and creature comforts that the country now offers.
It's not just the economy that makes this country attractive, as besides its rich cultural heritage, India has some of the most exotic and beautiful tropical beaches in the world. Its cities and towns are filled with amazing architecture, dating back several hundreds of years to modern glass and steel skyscrapers. Its restaurants cater a wide array of cuisines, the watering holes are filled with the best beverages the world has to offer, its people are friendly and hospitable and to top it all English is widely spoken.
What makes this an even more attractive option is the fact that here, the pound has not yet totally lost its clout; everything is positively affordable compared to the rest of Europe. It is an alluring option as a holiday destination with the looming spectre of the credit crunch hovering overhead.
With regards to music you don't have to do too much Googling to find out that the nation's most popular musical obsession is Bollywood in all its Technicolor glory.
But time never stands still, there is a new breed of Indian hedonist; a young, vibrant, trendy and innovative generation that has rejected the kitsch commerciality of Bollywood for the riskier and innovative new sound of electronic music. You will find them in every major city in India including Mumbai, Calcutta, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad... and of course, with its beaches, bars and love for all things fun and musical - Goa!
So its not surprising that Goa has developed it own festival, which to date has been attracting a massive European attendance. Music lovers are now much more likely to travel to get their fix in exotic environments, especially with the rise of festivals like 'Exit' in Serbia, 'Sonar' in Barcelona and 'Burning Man' in Arizona. It's a myth that Goa is a place traditionally associated with psy-trance.. because what one isn't aware of, is the amount of sheer quality electronic music that's being played out in clubs, bars and beach parties along the densely populated stretches of Goa's three main beaches - Baga, Calangute and the golden sands of Candolim.
The Sunburn festival on Candolim Beach is a new three day event that showcases the best the West has to offer pitted against India's new breed of DJ. This is a huge outdoor celebration much like that of Ibiza in the early 90's. You will find beach parties that are free spirited and fun and when you look around, you will be mesmerised by the setting… and wonder where, for all of your life, had Goa been. There is an unashamedly positive attitude, its liberal and practically unspoilt, Sunburn is as Ibiza was, and if all goes well will never turn into what Ibiza is.
It is this massive shift in musical tastes that Defected Records has recognised. The label has been invited to host the main stage at Sunburn as well as tour its DJ's elsewhere in the country. The festival was also the catalyst to the first compilation release in Goa. Submerge In the House was the debut release in conjunction with a new local collective of DJ's and promoters. It reached No.2 in the country's compilation charts with as close to half as many sales as international pop sensation Shakira. Defected In the House Goa 09 will be the next release, locally manufactured and distributed as well as sold in every other territory in the world. It is mixed by one of India's finest DJ's - Pearl, a DJ that has overcome cultural expectations of women in India, to become one of the countries first established International DJ's and an Indian ambassador for global dance music.
This is the first project of its kind. Having said that...
The future of electronic music scene in India is exciting and intoxicating, and its vision is global. The Djs that champion this vision are, like Defected, looking at a global palette to develop and create their sonic identity. It's not surprising that Indian youth are looking beyond the bread-and-butter remixes of Bollywood pop songs and embracing this new dance music revolution.. a revolution that Defected is proud to pioneer and support in India.
