Details: With a heady mix of electronica, filthy funk and synth pop sass, Coco Electrik have been making waves on the underground for over 2 years, acquiring an army of fans along the way from their shows at Cargo, 333, the ICA and Islington Academy amongst others. Punctuated by Anne Booty’s unique vocals and with a wealth of acclaim behind them from the likes of the NME, Popjustice, Tiga and Cut Copy, this album marks a coming of age for the sultry glitch-pop group!
The brain-child of Australian born one-time Ken Russell associate Anne Booty (real name btw), London based four-piece Coco Electrik, first came to the attention of those in the know with ‘Your Love Is Gum’, a split-single with then label mates Tom Vek. A series of acclaimed singles followed, with each release gaining the band ever-more glowing praise.
A superlative cover of ‘Tainted Love’ for Audi’s Remastered campaign and a recent guest vocal spot for Anne on Acoustic Ladyland’s ‘Cuts & Lies’ single have seen them reaching new heights. Now with their debut album, Army Behind The Sun, due to drop on the 21st May 2007 through Oscillation Records the band’s star is firmly in the ascendant.
Opening the album with the effortlessly gilt-edged pop of Apollonia 6 cover, Sex Shooter and Paint It Red, Coco Electrik’s genre-bending vibes are immediately infectious. The driving, trashy majesty of next single ‘Sasparilla Kiss’ and ‘Dance To Cash’ followed by the laid-back throb of ‘Love Machine’ reveal the band’s hidden breadth and depths.
Last year’s lauded Apple Pie single keeps proceedings rolling as Anne comes into her own with playful lyrics and a distinctive vocal style. ‘Pussyfooter’s delicious, stabbing bass grooves and infectious chorus segue with the atmospheric, soulful sounds of ‘Sweet & Sour’, before the psychedelic epic that is Fall Into My Party comes to the fore, Anne’s generously layered lyrics playing off the track’s electronic heart. Tear On Your Shoulder rounds this harmonious outing off in superb style demonstrating that bleeps can be beautiful, set amongst incredibly heart-breaking vocals.
Army Behind The Sun is an electro pop extravaganza that will see Coco Electrik taking their rightful place in the pop firmament. |
