"Fire" Barnett started DJ'ing in early
2001 at the tender age of 15. The first records
to grace his decks were of the Happy Hardcore variety
(96-98 particularly took his fancy). He continued
to play this until the Summer of 2001 when Hard
House shot into his life. This chunky, underground
style of
Hard House that BK produced grabbed his fancy immediately.
It all started from an accidental purchase of a
Hard House CD.
He spread the word over the next few months at various
locations in South Wales. Code Red 2001, being a
Hardcore rave, did not openly welcome Hard house.
He realised that his future was not in raves anymore
and needed a change of scene.
I.M.P. Hard (the local record shop) was his first
live performance on the wheels of steel where he
played along side DJ's twice the age of him but
still always got the main set of every night. It
consisted of a relatively minimal sound system and
a smokey back room in a Pub in Brecon. This new
found fame made him popular with the locals who
craved something more which Pop couldn't provide.
This was then relocated and renamed to 'Chunky But
Funky' @ Harley's in early 2002. The I.M.P. DJ's
followed Fire to the Club and supported him each
night. Alas this was never meant to be and the Chunky
But Funky crew has since dispersed leaving Brecon
none the wiser.
After coming 3rd in the Funkydory, Cardiff based
DJ competition 2002, Fire has managed to work his
way into the clubs of Cardiff (Bionic, Ultra Sonik,
Bat Country). A slow but steady start in late 2002
has resulted in his name becoming progressively
more known and respected.
In early 2003 a new night in Brecon was created
that goes by the name of KLASSIC. As soul promoter
of the night (under jurisdiction of the owners of
The Lounge) Fire is in control of when the nights
occur and with what DJs, therefore changing the
vibe of each night individually. So far he has had
guests from Cardiff such as Fixed Rate, The Rehab
DJs and MC NRG – Dreamscape/Helter Skelter/Devotion
an all round underground HERO. Soon to be in double
figures, Klassic has taken off nicely in such a
quaint farm orientated area.
Fire flaunts a number of different styles. He mixes
a combination of Happy Hardcore (96-Modern), Old
Skool Hardcore and a selection of Dutch/Hardcore
Techno with the same enthusiasm and originality
as that of his Hard House and Trance. As his styles
clearly show, he remains loyal to the Underground
sound that all the Dreamscape and Helter Skelter
DJ's and MC's preached. His styles of DJ'ing, MC'ing,
scratching, mixing and variety of tricks makes him
a DJ to look out for (unless you suffer from motion
sickness), there's always a surprise to be had. |
