This was billed as the Final Countdown, not just for the year, but for good. Canvas, The Cross and The Key were all saying farewell to clubland after 14 years. I stood outside for a bit at the little burger van and watched lines of people arrive fairly early for The Cross, as the unwelcome rain began to drizzle. It’s quite unique having this little clubbing community located all in the same yard. I’d never been to Canvas before and I was impressed. It was huge; 3 rooms, with Bugged Out hosting what I assumed was the main room, which was very like an old warehouse party; massive speakers, a high ceiling, just like a warehouse! Secretsundaze were in the room at the back, and Trailer Trash were squeezed in between.

When it had filled up by midnight it was absolutely rammed. You couldn’t move and getting between rooms was chaos. Trying to go to the toilet was even more ridiculous. One guy claimed it was 4 toilets for 4000! Although the nice guy outside let you slip round the back if you were lucky enough.

It was like a
small festival, and when Andy Weatherall was on in the Bugged Out room he was faced by a sea of people, with a few on top of each others shoulders. The music was pulsating, very loud, quite intense and I loved it every minute of it. I’m no techno expert, which is nice as I can just enjoy it without over analysing tunes! However, I am a laser freak, so I was very happy to see lots of bright colours zipping and whizzing through the air. It was all techno, acid and twisted beats, reminding me of Ibiza this year, when the simple introduction of a kick drum got rapturous cheers. We stayed in there most of the night, and I wondered if a normal night at Canvas was like this?

The other 2 rooms were also excellent. It was quite funky and disco like in Secretsundaze then all of a sudden it wasn’t! It was like a switch got flicked, which was accompanied by another huge cheer for a powerful kick drum. Carl Craig the Detroit techno wizard and Dixon made sure of that. Techno is so good, when it’s banged out like this. They had to put an umbrella up to cover the decks, water or maybe sweat(?) was leaking from somewhere, quite a sight! For a minute I was worried Rhianna was gonna come on and start singing! Wasn’t in Trailer Trash as much, it was silly busy in there, but Flamboyant is a good word to describe it!

It was still packed well after 5am, there was no room to sit, little room to stand, so you just had to keep on dancing. There was a long queue to get your coat back too, like 1 hour or something!

A great send off to a legendary clubbing triangle, I hope The Cross and The Key had equally as memorable nights.
