The Gallery, at Turnmills, celebrates its 10th year on the 29th April, and to mark the occasion, a series of very big nights have been scheduled, kicking off with special boat parties tonight (22nd), and again on the 29th. The afterparty (or should that be main event?), tonight, at Turnmills will see world number 3 and Dutch trance master Armin Van Buuren endure an 8 hour marathon session!
So, it was off to Tower Pier for 8 o'clock and the boat, aptly named The Dutch Master, even although Armin wasn't actually on the boat! The boat had three floors, a couple of bars and of course, DJs. Mutiny were joined by Paul Jackson (of Get Get down fame), Steve Mac and Raymonda Rodriguez, who would all play the backroom in Turnmills later on. The boat was busy but not full, and it was gentle house music for the four hour round trip. It was a novel and enjoyable experience, but the time seemed to drag a bit towards the end, and the number of times you can pass Canary Wharf in the space of a few hours is amazing!
It was then on to Turnmills, where Armin had been in full swing since 11:30, and the main room was already rammed when we arrived. One thing that you always get with trance, and The Gallery, is energy, and the crowd were definitely up for it, making for a brilliant atmosphere. The pulsating sounds of the increasingly popular driving progressive trance sound hit you as soon as you entered the room. All the big trance DJs are currently into this, as well as many progressive house jocks.
With such a long set, (you should have seen the amount of records he had with him!) we were treated to the whole trance spectrum, and midway through, the trademark Dutch sound was unleashed; you know the stuff with the euphoric breakdowns and uplifting synths that some people find a bit too cheesy? However, I can assure you that the main room loved every minute of it.
Many critics of trance are blinkered by this euphoric sound, and believe that all trance is like this, but if they had been here tonight, then they would have had to change their opinion. Tech trance is another of the many sub genres, and I swear that when the bass made its entrance in Remy and Klinkenberg's Till Ya Drop, the walls and roof did actually shake!
With a couple of hours still to go, we decided to leave, with the main room still very busy and enthralled by Armin's flawless performance. Everyone who was there appreciated his magnificent display of trance, and it was easy to see why he is so popular. I don't think he left the DJ box once during all that time, and he always seems to be enjoying himself. However, there's always an idiot, and one guy managed to lean over and knock the needle clean off the record, which did not go down well with Mr Van Buuren!
The Gallery looks set to continue in this fine vain of form over the coming months, with almost every big name you can think of! Its not just trance either, but all trance fans should note that the two Pauls are coming; that's Oakenfold and Van Dyk. Should be good! |
