After the glamorous
and star studded Breakspoll Awards at Fabric the
previous night, it was on to The Egg at King’s
Cross for the Afterparty.
At first glance, you wouldn’t even know a
club exists from its exterior, but once inside there
are three floors to enjoy. The ground floor is the
main room, labelled The Allstars arena for tonight,
and is reasonably big with the DJ booth away in
the corner. Floor 2 is similar in design and size,
but the dance floor was strangely quiet all night.
The top floor is an unusual design; you can’t
see the crampt DJ booth as you enter, as it is hidden
away round the corner. Most of the room is taken
up with lounge type seats, and has a very small
dance floor. There is also a luxurious looking chill
out room as you enter, in every sense of the word;
it’s outside!
By midnight, the main room was very busy, and a
great atmosphere had developed as Atomic Hooligan
took centre stage shortly after. Having been impressed
with these guys before, I was eager to see them
again, and they didn’t disappoint. The main
body of their set consisted of dirty heavy breaks,
as you would expect for such an event, with Terry
filling in with some delightful scratch patterns.
Crowd pleasing classics were also dropped, such
as Papua New Guinea, and everyone was certainly
entertained. The only downside, for me anyway, was
the annoying MC who wouldn’t give it a rest
for 2 seconds!
It was then up to the top floor to see Danny McMillan
go back to back with the highly skilled J-Me (formerly
of Hybrid). McMillan is fast becoming a star in
the breakbeat world and co-hosted the awards ceremony
for the second year running the night before. It’s
always interesting to see two DJ’s go back
to back, sometimes you may get a bit of rivalry,
but these guys complimented each other very well.
McMillan provided the backbone of their performance,
with seamlessly mixed breaks, and was also very
fond of the filters on the mixer! J-Me added more
flamboyant touches with his exceptional scratching
skills, and also dropped several tunes with the
familiar 4/4 house rhythm, leaving the breaks behind
for a bit. This was well appreciated by the crowd,
and made for a very pleasant change and contrast.
The annoying MC from earlier was now complimenting
the music very well, with some very original beatboxing.
Around 20 DJs from the breaks world graced the three
floors over the course of the night; notable big
names not mentioned above, included Radioactive
Man, Evil9 and Electrosluts; with three floors it
was just impossible to see everyone!
Overall, it was a very good night, the attendance
probably suffering slightly from being in the shadow
of the main event. The atmosphere was very friendly
and party like, the kind you tend to get at smaller
events and clubs, which can often be missing at
the “superclubs”; a big thumbs up to
