Oh my! The May Bank
holiday Sunday 4th May was set to be one of the
greatest clubbing events of the 2003. Firstly the
venue was the newly refurbished Bomb in Nottingham,
probably the best club in the country for an underground
Jacking session and secondly it was the long awaited
return of the Legendary Chicago Jackin’ machine....
DERRICK CARTER.
The event was ‘Born on the floor’ and
had the amazing line up of Derrick’s very
own Label Classic Records alongside its sister label
Music for Freaks!!! HEAVY. Also on the bill was
Kenny Hawkes, Justin Harris and playing live, Freaks
with Stellar Attar. I had dreamt about this night
for months and now it was final here!
Unfortunately the pre-jack boat party was sold out,
but I had the pleasure to bump, literally, into
two sweaty lads near the bomb at about 8.00pm, they
were on the hunt for vodka after a days hard session
on the floating disco, unfortunately I didn’t
see them again all night! But they seemed to have
enjoyed themselves as they fell over themselves
to tell me how good it was. After a few cheeky’s
around Nottingham we finally arrived at the venue
at 11.00pm. The small doorway between 2 shops is
by no means a reflection of the bomb’s inner
decor! Which is made up of little white cave like
chambers downstairs and a succession of stairways
leading you into outside courtyards and other hide
jems, lost ??? Well, not really and good fun for
a few circuits when you get itchy feet.
Once inside the venue it was already heaving with
Dave Congreve the resident DJ doing his thin’!
I was glad to find myself on the tiny main room
dance floor when Derrick Carter final walked in.
As he brushed passed me I couldn’t help giving
my all time hero’s a pat on the back and mumble
something in his ear! He hit the decks as he meant
to go on playing HARD Jackin House, rocking the
crowd with his own unique boompty boomp style! The
place was on fire and the bomb turned into its normal
sweat pit! After a few circuits of the club and
a chill out in the court yard I soon got into my
flow on the dance floor!
You can see why this man cost so much to book, the
crowd loved him, the music was flowing seamlessly
and everyone was having an amazing time!!!! All
that was apart from the captain of the ship Derrick,
who looked a little the worse for wear with a faint
black eye and a sort of hip hop headdress, possibly
to mop up the buckets of sweat or to scare of avid
fans??? He also seemed a bit moody and not his usual
jolly self! If I was picking up about 4000 big ones
I’d have a smile form ear to ear! But no one
seemed to mind as it was all about the music and
no-one was complaining about that!!!!
Unfortunately I seemed to miss everyone one else
who DJ’d! Don’t know how or why but
I did, even though I was centre sweat pit for most
of the night. As usual 3.00am came around too fast
and the legend that is Derrick Carter was gone!
Not to be seen until another rare appearance in
the midlands in about a year’s time! The club
rocked, the people jacked and everyone went away
very happy. Until next time Long live the bomb and
Derrick Carter. Over and Out Captain Jack……WOODY. |
