The massive queue of
people spanning a block near London’s The
End marked the return of Riot! after a month holiday.
Judging by the people outside of the club at 3pm,
this Sunday event was going to go off big time!
Starting with a top line-up, great music, a fantastic
crowd and a selection of UK dance scene celebrities;
this was quite simply your typical Riot! Outstanding!
Riot! happens just once a month and that is why
it’s so special. There are people who actually
stay in on Saturday nights just so they are fresh
at 3pm on Sunday. (Of course, you also get your
selection of mad for clubbers that haven’t
felt their pillow since the previous Thursday
night as well!) So, for those of you who have
been living under a rock for the last 2 ½
years and not been yet, allow me to enlighten
you on this monthly event, which should never
be missed.
Once you make it past the queue and walk down
the stairs into the club, you enter a room filled
with people. The music hits you from either side
and you are faced with a choice: wicked funky
beats on the right or slammin hard style on the
left. It’s just not like your typical clubbing
experience because the music in both rooms is
consistently excellent and can keep even your
most exhausted raver on their feet until the lights
turn on.
The people inside are incredible as well. This
is the one club where gay, straight, lesbian (whatever)
actually kiss, hug, talk and dance together. No
one is any better than the next and the crowd
is welcoming to newcomers as well. Mixmag staff
regularly attends with their mad crew and it’s
not unusual to end up chatting with UK celebrity
DJs like Anne Savage and Ed Real at the bar.
The line up on this Sunday included: GRH, Alex
Kidd, EJ Doubell, Ed Real, Danny Gilligan, Andy
Farley, and BK in the main room. And Ignition
Crew, Tommy Showtime, and Trophy Twins in Bar
Riot. The club was packed, the vibe was high,
and by the end of the night, the crowd was kicking
the ass out of the dance floor in the hard room.
The only complaint was the number of times “Satisfaction”
was played in Bar Riot. We hear it enough on Radio
One, so once would have been plenty.
I have been clubbing in London for years and have
never come across an event that is so consistent.
The people, the music, the lights, the venue …
Riot!, it’s wicked!
