Having reviewed Progression over
a year ago, shortly after it moved to its new home
of The Liquid Rooms, I though it was about time
that I went back and checked out how it was getting
on.
And it's doing very nicely, since you ask.
Progression is fast becoming one of the Edinburgh
big boys alongside the well-established names of
Taste and Luvely, both also at The Liquid Rooms,
as the amazing turn out tonight shows. They have
managed to create a large following but maintain
an air of space that helps the venue seem full of
energy without feeling over packed.
However, before I go any further I think that I
should point out a health warning: Don't dance next
to the speakers unless you like being deaf for a
week after going out The Liquid Rooms has the best
should system in Edinburgh! I learnt this the hard
way.
One of the unique factors about Progression is that
they regularly put on big name DJ's, this months
example being Lee burridge, but they also have great
residents who are an attraction all on their own.
Gav Grant, Derek Martin and Alan Dobson, along with
quarterly resident Desyn Masiello are all technically
great DJ's as well as the first three being the
promoters of Progression. It makes a nice change
to see talented guys working together to create
something good rather than blatantly self-promoting.
The Liquid Rooms is the perfect venue for this type
of night. It has a large, open dance floor with
a stage at one end and a bar at the other surrounded
by a balcony with a second bar and ample comfortable
seating. There is a small but comfy back room and
on occasions where the club gets a little busy they
open the outdoor courtyard at the back of the venue
that is decked out with plenty of seating.
The music at Progression is wicked and the atmosphere
is pretty good too, so the seats come in handy to
recuperate from the time spent on the dance floor.
However, if you're looking for a different way to
relax, head up to the balcony where an "angel
fingers" massage bar has been set up. Tingly
head massages using weird little rake like contraptions,
sounds odd but very pleasurable!
I definitely suggest anyone who hasn't been to Progression
before, to check it out. Anyone who has been doesn't
need to be told twice, you can pretty much guarantee
they'll be there again. |
