Urban, street, trendy
and cool. Four words that I can use to describe
the crowd at Metrogroove, Danny Ramplings monthly
residency at Turnmills in London.
Being at a loose end one Saturday I decided to check
it out. At midnight there was a long queue of people
waiting to get in, but showing the members card
gained me swift entrance with minimum of fuss. The
club was heaving but could certainly deal with the
numbers inside.
Turnmills is a warren of a nightclub, with two main
dance floors, a chill-out lounge and a massive bar
area. The lighting on the dance floors is low, the
music is loud and the atmosphere electric. Metrogroove
attracts a well-dressed urban crowd, who are really
into their music whilst being stylish yet friendly.
The music on the main floor started off funky and
as the night progressed so did the music, becoming
darker and more tribal. Danny Rampling played an
excellent set and Peter Rauhopfer who was playing
his debut in London stunned the crowd with his eclectic
beats and mixing.
Everyone was dancing and mingling with smiles on
their faces and there was a really good atmosphere.
The lighting was simple yet extremely well managed
and added to the mood of the night.
The nearest comparison I could make of the evening
was with the indoor arena of Space in Ibiza and
at times I had to remind myself that I was in London
and not sunny Spain.
When it all got too much on the dance floor I moved
over to the bar area which was brightly lit and
had a number of tables and chairs in the corner.
The music could still be heard pumping through the
sound-system but the atmosphere was now one of a
west-end bar with everyone mingling and talking.
Everyone had made an effort to look cool and it
was nice to sit back and chat with strangers as
if we were old friends.
Back on the dance floor there was an opportunity
to hear the latest offerings from the Miami Music
Conference, with some interesting new tunes and
some re-working of old classics. The hip-hop influence
in House Music is starting to show more and more,
with many new tunes using full-blown lyrics from
the likes of The Streets and increasing use of break-beats.
It was good to hear the continued evolution of the
scene, which proves that House is constantly shifting
and changing with these DJ’s having the talent
and confidence to experiment and pull-off some neat
tricks. Metrogroove allowed them to do that whilst
still keeping the mood of the crowd happy and the
dance floor moving.
After frequenting many of London’s more glamorous
nights it was nice to enjoy an evening where everyone
had come out to rave to good music in a mature and
pleasant surrounding. I would highly recommend this
night to anyone who enjoys their House music to
be on the funky tribal New York vibe and I will
defiantly be visiting again. |
