If someone were looking
into hosting parties, common sense would dictate
that the best night to hold your parties would be
a Friday or Saturday night. Indeed the very thought
of hiring a venue in London, booking a host of up-and-coming
funky house DJ’s and choosing Sunday night
as the date of your party would be an audacious
thing to try. But the promoters of Love Puppy are
extremely adventurous and reckon they have found
a winning formula that they feel confident will
work for them.
Started by a group of friends who kept on meeting
in glam house parties around the UK and Ibiza they
began holding parties in various bars around London.
Their most recent party was at The Sand Bar in Clapham,
South London. Already quite a well-known bar in
the area it has a good reputation so after consulting
my London A-Z I took a drive down there to join
in the fun.
Inside the venue consists of two levels. The main
bar area on ground level has a reasonable dance
floor, then through a door and up some stairs there
is another room with couches and sofas giving the
impression of a smart living room, itself served
by another bar.
Upon arrival with our jackets quickly put in the
cloakroom, we ordered our drinks and took in the
atmosphere. The party was already in full swing
with the main dance floor busy by eight o’clock.
It was clear that a lot of people knew each other
from previous Love Puppy parties and everywhere
I looked I could see people greeting one another
with hugs and handshakes.
At the bar I ordered some drinks and then got talking
to this guy who pulled out a pack of cards and proceeded
to perform magical card tricks. This was all part
of the event and a small team of magicians were
performing to groups of people throughout the night.
It was amusing to see the looks on some people faces
later on in the evening when they were a little
worse for wear and their minds were being even more
befuddled by cards appearing out of thin air.
Musically the night was brilliant, with the DJ’s
mixing classics from the summer with the latest
Funky tracks. By midnight the atmosphere in both
rooms was electric and everyone was dancing vigorously.
Residents Rob Marmot and Marbles played two of the
best sets of the evening, catering to their crowds
need. At the drop of David Guettas “Little
More Love” the whole club erupted with people
jumping on chairs and tables to dance, much to the
annoyance of some of the staff who could do little
to stop them.
The vibe was very happy all night, with people laughing
and joking with each other. I overheard one guy
comment how he had bumped into loads of people whom
he had met over the summer in Ibiza and you could
have knocked me over with a horse tranquiliser when
the same happened to me.
As the evening progressed more people flocked to
the upstairs room, which was by now incredibly hot.
The music was deeper but the crowd showed no less
enthusiasm. I must mention that there was a good
even spread of male and female clubbers who had
all made an effort to look cool and had dressed
up for the occasion. This meant that the vibe was
kept happy and everybody had fun.
To conclude it was good to see the birth of a new
scene in London that isn’t afraid to be adventurous
and take a few risks with their party promotion.
Regulars told me that every party gets better than
the last and this one was no exception. |
