Dusted were celebrating
their second birthday on Saturday night at Pacha
in London and seeing as it had been a long time
since I had visited this particular venue I decided
to go along and see how they were doing.
For those of you who haven’t visited yet,
Pacha is situated right in the middle of London’s
Victoria station. As you come up the escalators
from the London Underground you can hear the bass
pumping through the dividing walls.
In their own words they describe it as “set
in a 1920’s building beautifully dressed in
its original oak panelling and features a stunning
stained glass ceiling. A fabulous balustraded gallery
overlooks the main dance floor below creating an
opulent and visually inspiring environment.”
The result is a beautiful shrine to Funky House
music that is filled with up-for-it clubbers every
weekend.
Dusted had set an all-white theme for the evening
and had decorated both rooms with big white drapes
and balloons. An almost constant stream of glitter
fell from the ceiling onto the massed throng of
people below.
I arrived around midnight and after gaining swift
entry rushed straight to one of the clubs many bars
to get a drink. The venue was pretty full and everybody
was dancing and socialising with about a third of
them adhering to the all white dress code.
Musically the main room rocked with the emphasis
firmly on the funkier side of house. Norman Jay
took over the decks about 3 am and played the best
set of the evening, dropping to my amazement a few
tribal numbers in between the funky uplifting vocals.
The crowd couldn’t get enough of it and people
were dancing on every possible space, including
podiums, tables and chairs. I bumped into some friends
from Manchester, stalwarts of the northern dance
scene and they couldn’t stop repeating how
they found the atmosphere electric in there. This
was nice to hear, especially as the general consensus
amongst clubbers is that the House Scene only really
exists in northern Britain, with the south being
dominated by the sounds of R&B.
Everybody seemed really friendly and approachable.
In the VIP area upstairs an entire table had been
given to a group of girls on a Hen night and they
were partying hard sipping on champagne and laughing
with the other guests.
To conclude, a fabulous night for lovers of Funky
House, a top venue, fun clientele and a superb sound
system populated by good DJ’s, I give it a
big thumbs up. |
