Soo Delicious aims to put the fun
back into clubbing, and that they certainly do.
Usually clubs are either music driven or full of
cheesy student stuff, but its not often that a club
can balance both. Bubbles and bouncy castles mixed
with decent house music is a partnership I haven't
seen in Edinburgh for a bit.
Tonights party was a birthday event and the music
was a history of house, a progression from the early
days till now. The DJ's for the night were Soo Delicious
resident Pete Owen and Joy's Brett King. The theme
was quite a good idea and meant that a few old classics
I hadn't even thought of for years got a chance
to shine once again. As it was a birthday the promoters
were also giving out fab little presents with a
"Hot Sex" book and a Soo Delicious CD.
This was the first time that I had been to Commplex,
it is a bit out of the way from the normal city
centre venues, but I was really impressed. The venue
is a converted church and has been decorated well
inside, much of the club is carpeted and some original
features, such as spiral staircases leading to the
balcony make for a pleasant setting. The balcony
is really comfortable with big soft sofas and loads
of pillows, the shape of the church windows have
been filled in with mirrors and the candle lit tables
added to the ambience. Tonight though it was a little
less chilled out than I expect it would be with
the appearance of a huge inflatable boxing ring
that could be used by anyone for free all night.
Despite the nice décor, the venue has a great
atmosphere about it and reminded me of the dear
old departed Willie House, and Edinburgh clubbing
institution closed down almost two years ago.
My only complaint about the venue is that the DJ
plays from up in the balcony and isn't viable from
the dance floor, but I guess that didn't think about
that when they were building the church!
Looking from the balcony onto the dance floor below
it was nice to see some added fun touches such as
the bubble machine occasionally squirting over the
crowd. Shame that there wasn't that many people
there to enjoy it. The Soo Delicious crew were taking
part in a charity event alongside Taste, a very
respectable and well-established Edinburgh club,
the night after this event. I reckon that, as well
the fact that the club is not in the centre of town
and has a reasonably early licence probably contributed
to this. That has to be a reason for it as the venue
is plush, the promoters seamed to be making an effort,
the music was good and the drink fairly priced.
It's actually a shame that more people weren't there
to enjoy it.
Soo Delicious are not having an event in December
due to the commitments of the venue, they are also
considering a new home for the event a bit nearer
to the city centre. If you like your music but are
up for a bit of fun on the side, I would definitely
recommend keeping your eye out for Soo Delicious
in the new year. |
