People had been looking
forward to this night for weeks. Paul Van Dyk was
coming to visit, and none of us were going to miss
it. Tickets were exclusively available on the door,
so by 10pm when the club opened, the queue had already
started to disappear around the street corner.
The guest list for this night was so long that it
had a queue that was as big as the one for the rest
of us. However the club dealt with this demand well,
opening seperate doors for both sets of people.
Ushered through them within 10 minutes, we paid
a modest door fee before being unleased onto the
dance floor.
I have been to Promise a few times, but every time
I go it seems to get better. The DJ, drenched in
UV light, looks down from the back wall onto a large
dark dance floor. Just to the left of this stage,
stairs take you up a balcony which circles around
the entire room. From the balcony you can get to
the 'Always' back room, playing US Garage to the
devoted and acting as a chill out room to the rest.
The sound system is remarkable. The main speakers
easily rose over my head, pounding crisp music out
onto the floor. Other speakers further back and
even up in balcony ensured the music was spread
over the entire club.
The music easily exceeded expectations. I have to
admit that I was too busy running around to give
the opening DJ a fair chance, but for the half hour
before Paul Van Dyk's set started I liked everything
I saw. At half one, to a continually swelling crowd
our guest DJ started his set. His mixing and music
choice were both excellent, and I am sure I spotted
a CD unit on top of his two decks being used. He
also seemed to be playing with us instead of at
us, even going as far as to sign autographs mid
set.
Even when some of the few drunks there abused this
vibe by insisting on his attention in crucial parts
of a mix he still seemed friendly and almost apologetic.
This helped to create an outstanding atmosphere.
I walked away from the club with a ringing in my
ears and felt like I had been at something a bit
special. Foundation plays host to Shindig on Saturday
night, and I have always seen Promise as the baby
brother. It seems things have changed. |
