Details: Plug hits the grand old age of three years this September! Since opening Plug has offered Sheffield and the North of England as a whole a brilliant party concept. There have been magnificent live performances; it was Plug that was requested by both Groove Armada and the Prodigy when compiling an intimate showcase for their sound, both adding incendiary performances with the latter’s vitriolic effort selling out in less than three hours!

As well the likes of Lily Allen, Patti Smith, Babyshambles, Justice and the Klaxons have all contributed legendary shows, not to mention emotional homecomings for both Jarvis Cocker and the Artic Monkeys. All acts have benefited form that rare combination of grandiosity and intimacy that has defined Plug, making it an arena which delivers the wide ranging impart that marks out the best live performances without ever over-awing the crowds.

It’s also provided magnificent club space, allowing for the gritty rhythms of Detonate, the neon lunacy of Planet Zogg, bassline heaven from Reflective and panoramic house, breaks and techno form Urban Gorilla. And there’s the flagship party Shuffle, which manages to showcase the live aesthetic brilliantly earlier on in the evening before boasting a superfluous clubnight for the evening. Balancing new talent with established stars, acts like Chromeo, Wiley, Erol Alkan and Steve Angello have appeared at the differing formats, showcasing live music from every genre and main room house alongside more alternative anthems at the club.

So a birthday for a venue of such magnitude needs to bristle with top talent, and this event does just that! Headlining are Wall of Sound’s crown jewels and the local lads done good, Reverend and the Makers. They remain one of the few bands that manage to combine the lusty head rush of vintage rock n roll with dance music’s otherworldly escapism, allaying them both with infectious song writing.

It’s why the ravers join forces with the radio vixens in snapping them up on their iPods and bellowing their lyrics out at festivals and gigs across the land. Old Plug heroes, they’ve played to rapturous reception before both as a band and as part of their DJ collective Reverend Soundsystem, and are easily the most iconic act to sum up exactly what the venue is all about.

They’re joined by the Lords of the Flatbush, the bright-eyed hipsters whose sultry combination of electro, rock, ska and funk is fronted by the honey soaked vocals of Steve Edwards, whose contributions have peppered hits from Cassius, Bob Sinclair and Axwell. As rowdy and cool as the sly stone and fonz starring gang flick they take their name from, their blistering ability to morph these seemingly disparate influences into a lucid party makes for brilliant live shows, a full throttle assault of colour and sound.

There will also be a clutch of great DJs including Andy Nicholson, LJ Freeman and Tom Lee and Park Brigade Live plus further acts to be added to ensure the party is the biggest to hit Sheffield in aeons.

And cake. Lots of it.
